Middleham and Wensleydale

The neighbouring town of Middleham is found less than five minutes drive away in Wensleydale, an area of outstanding natural beauty steeped in history.
The town is based around Middleham Castle which was built in 1170 is known to have been the favourite home of Richard III. As well as this Middleham is famous for Horse racing and is known as the northern center for horse racing. A steady parade of race horses pass from the training yards each morning from the stables up to the famous Middleham gallops and back again. This is a must for all horse lovers.
Middleham is also known to be the home of the first recorded Jockey, Isaac Cape in 1733. Today it has five training stables within Middleham and eight more on the outskirts of the town.
Slightly further a field is Castle Bolton, found between the villages of Redmire and Carperby.
The castle was built in 1399 by Richard le Scrope, 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton and Lord Chancellor of England and to this day is still owned by his descendants. Castle Bolton is most famous as the prison of Mary Queen of Scots in 1568.
